as a teacher
For several years, I taught English & Creative Writing at Eastern Michigan University.
After a few years, I felt an inner nudge that I was ready for something new. I wanted a new challenge, a change of scenery, and an adventure.
I took a huge leap
and moved to NYC - where I knew no one. I found a job with an early literacy advocacy non-profit called Jumpstart for Young Children.
I grew up in the midwest. Living in NYC was a dream I'd held since childhood.




I met my person
A few years later we got married and had a baby. As my daughter grew she loved dinosaurs, trains, tutus, and watching the boats float by on our walks along the Hudson in Jersey City.
Disclaimer: The above sounds very idyllic. New motherhood is like trying to drink from a firehose while more tired than you've felt in your life.
I couldn't find clothes in the store with the things she liked on them. I bought her clothes from the boys' section with dinosaurs and trains. As a fun side project, I sketched and then made a dinosaur dress for her.
People loved it 😳
So did my daughter. She wore it for days on end. It was a playground hit with parents and kids.
My business partner Austin and I decided to make a few more designs and launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the company's beginnings.




We did it
In 30 days, the Kickstarter campaign raised $37,915 from 367 backers. We went on to participate in the Macy's Fashion accelerator and were featured in the Huffington Post, Racked, Metro, Gugu Guru, Upworthy, the Philadelphia Business Inquirer, NJ.com, and Maker's Row.
After three years, we sold Mitz Kids. It was bittersweet to let go of something I'd poured my heart and soul into. I felt lost. What next? What now?

When I was running Mitz Kids marketing, it became clear email marketing had the highest return on investment. I wanted to share what I'd learned with other entrepreneurs.
